What is a cookie?

A cookie is a file downloaded on to your computer when you access certain websites. Cookies enable websites (among other things) to storage and recover information about users or devices browsing habits and, depending on the information they contain and the way you use your device, they can be used to identify the user.

The user’s browser stores cookies on the hard disk only during the current session, so they take a minimal amount of memory space and they do not damage the PC. Cookies do not contain any kind of specific personal information and most of them are wiped out of the hard disk when the browser session is over (the so-called session cookies).

Most browsers accept cookies as standard and, independently of them, they allow or impede temporary or memorized cookies on the security settings.

Depending on the entity operating the computer or domain where cookies are sent and treating the data obtained, two types can be distinguished: first-party cookies and third-party cookies. There is also a second classification depending on the period of time cookies remain in the user’s browser: session cookies or persistent cookies. Finally, there can be another classification into 5 types of cookies, depending on the purpose of obtaining this information: technical cookies, customization cookies, analysis cookies, advertising cookies and behavioural advertising cookies. You can read more about this topic in the Spanish Data Protection Agency’s Guide about the Use of Cookies (only available in Spanish).
