Horchata (tiger nut milk)
A classic summer drink
Horchata is the most excellent summer drink.
Planelles Donat is an emblematic ‘horchateria’ shop in Barcelona and since 1929 it has been producing and selling horchata.

Nutritional properties
Horchata is suitable for people affected by celiac disease and lactose intolerance. It has no cholesterol and it contains vitamin E, oleic acid and arginine. Horchata is rich in potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. As a consequence, it is considered to have similar mineral components than nuts.
It also has digestive properties derived from its amino acids and starch content, as well as its enzymes amylase and lipase.
Do you know tigernuts?
The cultivation of tigernut dates back thousands of years and dates back to the time of Egyptian civilization. It arrived in the Iberian Peninsula thanks to the Muslims, who introduced it to the Levant.
Chufa is harvested between mid-October and mid-December. Our horchata is made with chufa from the municipality of Alboraya that meets the quality standards of the D.O CHUFA DE VALENCIA.

A legend about horchata
Legend has it that a young villager let the king Jaime I the Conqueror, king of Catalonia and Aragon, taste the drink one day. The king, satisfied by its flavour, asked her: “What is it?”, and the girl replied: “This is tiger nut milk” (the drink’s original name). The king corrected her by saying: “This is OR (gold, in Catalan), xata (sweety, in Catalan)!”
